Rathburn Adds Sodick VN600Q Wire EDM to Expand its Capabilities in Machining Parts with Tight Tolerances

Rathburn Tool & Manufacturing recently added further depth to its advanced CNC machining capabilities with the acquisition of a Sodick VN600Q high-performance rigid linear motor drive wire EDM. This purchase not only represents the ongoing expansion of technology at Rathburn, it enables the company to take on projects of increasing difficulty.

Wire electrical discharge machines (EDM) use an electrically charged wire to cut metal parts. Using a thin wire in a bath of deionized water, the wire EDM removes material precisely by creating controlled electrical discharges. The wire can make tapered, 3D, and angled cuts in a wide range of materials including hardened steel, titanium, and tungsten carbide.

The Sodick VN600Q is specialized for machining challenging features at high precision not available with traditional CNC machining. For example, the Sodick has a work envelope of 23.6″ x 15.75″ x 12.2″ with an LN3W control with power settings capable of providing a very fine finish down to <20 Ra with up to four passes. It has absolute glass scales, providing excellent accuracy and increased precision.

“Companies come to Rathburn for precision parts that meet or exceed their manufacturing needs,” says Process Engineer Adam Hull. “The Sodick VN600Q gives us the ability to perform very delicate, high-precision work that simply can’t be done on other CNC equipment. It’s just another example of how Rathburn is committed to technology that helps our customers win.”
